OCTOBER 2019: THE CHURCH OF CHRIST ON MISSION IN THE WORLD

FOCUS: Evangelization takes place in obedience to the missionary mandate of Jesus: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Mt 28:19-20). In these verses we see how the risen Christ sent his followers to preach the Gospel in every time and place, so that faith in him might spread to every corner of the earth. (EG 19)

Opening Prayer:
+Invite someone to pray or use the “Prayer to the Holy Spirit”

OPENING SONG: Here I am Lord
Chorus Here am I, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.
I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard my people cry. All who dwell in dark and sin, My hand will save. I, who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send?
I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain. I have wept for love of them. They turn away.
I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will send the poor and lame. I will set a feast for them. My hand will save.

Chorus

Here am I, Lord.

DIALOGUE
The Church’s universal mission is born of faith in Jesus Christ, as is stated in our Trinitarian profession of faith: “I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father… For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. The redemption event brings salvation to all.”

For each one is included in the mystery of the redemption and Christ has united himself forever through this mystery. It is only in faith that the Church’s mission can be understood and only in faith that it finds its basis.

Nevertheless, also as a result of the changes which have taken place in modern times and the spread of new theological ideas, some people wonder: Is missionary work among non-Christians still relevant? Has it not been replaced by inter-religious dialogue? Is not human development an adequate goal of the Church’s mission? Does not respect for conscience and for freedom exclude all efforts at conversion? Is it not possible to attain salvation in any religion? Why then should there be missionary activity?

CLOSING HYMN: Go Tell Everyone (J60)

Chorus:
He sent me to give the good news to the poor,
Tell prisoners that they are prisoners no more,
Tell blind people that they can see, and set the down trodden free,
And go tell everyone the news that the kingdom of God has come
And go tell everyone the news that God’s kingdom has come.
God’s spirit is in my heart,
He has called me and set me apart
That is what I have to do, what I have to do

Chorus:
He sent me to give the good news to the poor,
Tell prisoners that they are prisoners no more,
Tell blind people that they can see, and set the down trodden free,
And go tell everyone the news that the kingdom of God has come
And go tell everyone the news that God’s kingdom has come.
Just as the Father sent me
I’m sending you out to be
Mt witness throughout the world, the whole of the world
Don’t worry what you have to say
Don’t worry because on that day
God’s spirit will speak in your heart, will speak in your heart
